How many of you love a good horror novel? While horror isn’t my preferred genre (I usually prefer fantasy or sci-fi), I do every once in awhile pick up a book to keep me on the edge of my seat. It is one of the reasons I love having the opportunity to read early or have books sent to me, since it is a fantastic way to be introduced to new authors and types of book that I may not picked up on my own. To me, the best horror books are the ones that mix reality with a bit of the supernatural, creating something that leaves you constantly wondering and thinking. Recently, I had the opportunity to read a new book that caught my interest – The Matriarch by Sharon Hawes. After reading the back of the book when it arrived, I couldn’t wait to get started!
The Matriarch: What is It?
Looking for a fun thriller that will keep you on the edge of your seat? If so, we think you will love The Matriarch by Sharon Hawes. In this interesting book, Cass Murphy returns to the small town where he grows up after an earthquake in Southern California. While he thought he would only be there for two weeks, things soon go interesting and wives and daughters begin to savagely murder their husband and fathers for no apparent reason. As Cass tries to figure out what is happening, things soon lead to a fruiting tree that is more malevolent than it first appears. Can he save this small town from this dangerous, man-hating Matriarch tree or will it be destroyed?
The Matriarch: Our Thoughts
Before I go any further, I will say that this was a very interesting and creative book. I never would have imagined picking up a book about a killer tree. It actually seemed a bit farfetched when I got my ARC (advanced reader copy) of the book. As someone who loves fiction though, I decided to give the book a chance and see where it took me. As someone who is new to the author, I will say that she set up a fantastic scene, letting the reader know where this maliciousness came from and how it has a rather ancient past. While the writing style is a bit different, it is great at giving that small town, everyone-knows-one-another feel that makes what is happening even more terrifying for the reader. Overall though, I will say it was a fascinating, fast paced read that is very hard to put down once you start reading. If you love horror stories, this is definitely a book for you!

This is typically a genre I read a lot but the plot sounds intriguing. I agree an evil tree sounds kind of silly but I think it’s different when you read the story and become engaged.

I truly enjoy a good book! One that takes me to new places and puts me in different situations and adventures!!
I don’t mind seeing or reading movies or books of horror. As long as they are NOT nothing but killing & killing & blood & more blood! Most of all, they don’t have a plot!
You have intrigued my interest, because what you have described in your review is everything I look for in a good horror story! I don’t know or heard of this author, but I don’t judge a story solely by its author.

The book sounds interesting. It’s nice to see a real book with pages to turn. For those who enjoy reading, there’s a great book called A Prayer for Owen Meany. by John Irving. It’s, in my opinion, a great story.
