Does your pup love sweet potato dog treats? In our household, training happens every day. Like most dogs, though, our girls are food motivated and love trying a variety of treats. With Ivi having food allergies, we have to be very picky about what the girls eat, especially since so many treats and dogs foods contain ‘poultry,’ ‘poultry meal,’ or flat-out turkey (her allergy). That doesn’t even count some of the other scary ingredients in some dog food.
Those are the main reasons we have moved on to making more homemade dog treats for the girls. Both girls love peanut butter treats and sweet potato dog treats, and they have been things we have regularly purchased from specialty stores on sale. Well, Daniel, since I can’t go anywhere near peanut butter with my allergies. Since a bag of sweet potato dog treats was so expensive, we knew we had to develop a better solution.
Luckily, my friend taught me the most amazing peanut butter sweet potato dog treats. Not only is the recipe super easy but very cost-effective too, and the most challenging part is waiting for the dog treats to finish dehydrating.
Just as a note, this works with other nut butter too. Many of you know that I have a peanut allergy. When I make these for the girls, I use almond butter powder. The original recipe calls for peanut butter powder, which most dogs love. Unless you have an allergy, like me, it is more cost-effective to go with peanut butter powder since it is MUCH cheaper.
While the original friend who gave us the recipe uses this dehydrator, you can use other tools. We have a dehydration function on our air fryer when making dog treats. You can even use your oven for dehydrating sweet potatoes, but I have never done this myself (here is a good article on how to do I, though).
Anyway, these peanut butter sweet potato dog treats are becoming a new favorite in our household. While I look for bigger sweet potatoes, make sure you cut them to the appropriate size for your pups. We are sure that your own dogs will love these sweet potato dog treats as much as ours!
PrintPeanut Butter Sweet Potato Dog Treats
Easy sweet potato dog treats that can be made in your home dehydrator. Just coat with powdered peanut butter or powdered almond butter for flavor.
- Prep Time: 5 minutes
- Cook Time: 5 hours
- Total Time: 5 hours 5 minutes
- Yield: 1.5 Cups 1x
- Category: Dog Treats
- Method: Dehydration
- Cuisine: Dog Food
Ingredients
- 1 Large Sweet Potatoes
- 1/4 cup per Sweet Potato Powdered Peanut Butter or Almond Butter Powder
- Dehydrator
- Mandolin Slicer or Sharp Cooking Knife
Instructions
Step 1: Have all of your ingredients out and ready to go. Also, make sure you scrub the sweet potatoes well, especially if they are organic!
Step 2: Slice the sweet potatoes into about 1/8 inch thick slices. You must try getting all of them to the same thickness, and if you don’t, they will all finish at different times. In other words, some of the sweet potato treats will be overcooked, some undercooked, and overall, a big mess. You can use a good cooking knife if you are comfortable or a mandolin slicer.
Step 3: Put the powdered peanut butter in a large bowl. Dip the sweet potatoes in the powder, ensuring both sides are covered.
Step 4: Lay all sweet potatoes out on your dehydrator trap. Make sure none of the sweet potatoes dogs treats touch.
Step 5: Place your tray in your dehydrator at 130 degrees for 5 hours. When finished, remove and let cool.
Step 6: Once all the peanut butter sweet potato dog treats are cool, place them in an air-tight container. Good for at least one week.
