Are you someone who enjoys caramel hot cocoa? I have enjoyed this treat since I was a child. Back in my hometown, we used to have a giant apple festival every October. Even though we were a small city, agriculture was always a huge part of how it survived. One of the local orchards was one of the major focal points of the city, being one of the oldest businesses. It was always a massive fall festival, with hayrides, amusement park rides, and food revolving around apples and traditional autumn foods. Kids always had various different cocoa drinks, one of my favorites being their caramel hot cocoa.
One of the things I loved so much about this drink is that it was always made from scratch. Kids would watch as they made the hot cocoa in a large pot and added a variety of flavorings. This may honestly be the root of my love for flavored coffee since I loved experimenting with different hot cocoa flavors. My two favorites were bouncing between peppermint and caramel. As an adult, caramel has always been something I go back to when I wanted a childhood comfort food. There is just something about the sweet flavor mixed with chocolate that is just soul food.
What surprised me the most is how easy it is to make homemade caramel hot cocoa. While it takes a little more time than a premade packet, the rich flavor makes it worth it! What I like the most is that everything you need is likely stuff you already have in your baking goods, except maybe mini marshmallows and quality caramel sauce. The entire process of making it from scratch is also less than 10 minutes, making it a quick treat to enjoy on a cold autumn day or while you are snowed inside. Either way, it is one of those treats that children of all ages can enjoy!
