Have you ever made banana ginger dog treats? Just like in any dog household, treat time is a big deal. While treats are mostly used for training, I think they deserve them too, especially after they were good outside or when the company is visiting. While we get the Barkbox, the two bags of treats don’t last very long with two extra-large dogs. Since Ivi also has food allergies, finding turkey-free, natural treats can quickly get expensive. For this reason, we have been trying to make more homemade dog treats.
One of the biggest misconceptions I have found about homemade dog treats is that everyone assumes they are expensive and difficult to make. You can make dog treats at a fraction of what you pay in stores, and many recipes take 15 – 30 minutes to make – start to finish. Best of all, they don’t have to include fancy ingredients – just typical fruits and ingredients you probably already have in your home. The trick is just making sure you pay attention to ingredients and not use anything dangerous for dogs.
Since I had some extra ingredients from my Misfit Market order, I decided to try making some banana ginger dog treats for Ivi and Rylie. After seeing them in a boutique, I knew I had to try them, especially after reading about ginger being perfect for dogs. While I could make twelve huge dog treats out of the recipe, do know that you can make more dog treats with smaller cookie cutters (I sometimes do this to make the treats last longer).
Though I will warn you, the most challenging part of making these banana ginger dog treats is keeping the dogs out of the kitchen. As these were baking, I had sharks circling the kitchen, eagerly waiting for a chance to try one of these treats (or hopefully, something would drop on the floor). I also found the ginger smell delightful throughout the house, making me wish I was making some ginger cookies for myself (I can’t promise that didn’t happen after).

PrintBanana Ginger Dog Treats
An inexpensive, easy-to-make homemade dog treats using simple ingredients. These Banana Ginger Dog Treats are a hit with dogs of all sizes and contain only four ingredients!
- Prep Time: 10 Minutes
- Cook Time: 20 Minutes
- Total Time: 30 Minutes
Ingredients
- 1 Banana (over ripe)
- 6 Egg Yolks
- 2 Tbsp Fresh Ginger
- 1 1/2 cups Whole Wheat Flour
Instructions
Step 1: Preheat the oven to 350 F.
Step 2: In a large bowl, mash the banana. Start adding the egg yolks to the mashed banana and mix thoroughly.
Step 3: Using a Microplane, grate 2 tablespoons of fresh ginger. Add to the banana mixture.
Step 4: Using a fork, add the flour and mix until it starts forming a ball.
Step 5: Put parchment paper out on your counter and flour the surface. Using your hand a rolling pin, flatten out the dough. Make sure to flour the dough to keep it from sticking lightly.
Step 6: Using your preferred cooking cutter, cut out the treats. Once you are finished, place on a non-stick cookie sheet and bake for 15-20 minutes. Remove when lightly brown and allow to cool before feeding your dogs.
Notes
Note 1: If you don’t have a Microplane (a long-handled grinder), you can use a standard kitchen, but I highly recommend purchasing a microplane. This is a fine grate grater that is a lifesaver in the kitchen. I highly recommend Oxo’s Microplane since it is inexpensive and easy to clean.
Note 2: If you have never used fresh ginger, peel it first. You don’t want to use the skin, just the fleshy part inside (like garlic).
