As some of you have noted from my previous dog reviews, I have a rather large, beautiful puppy. Reya isn’t just a dog, but a member of my family. I focus on making sure she has the best food, toys, and everything she needs to be happy and safe. Unfortunately, having a large dog also comes with very large messes. While Reya is a quick learner and great at listening to commands (for a malamute), her messes are just as large as her. In other words, when she makes a mess with her water, she can easily seem to be mopping our kitchen floor. Since I am someone who isn’t really fond of messes – especially in my kitchen – I knew I had to find something to make meals less messy. After a bit of research, I found what I thought might be the perfect solution – the Neater Feeder. Wanting to know more, I reached out to Neater Feeder, who was kind enough to give Reya the large Neater Feeder for us to review. Knowing how messy my Reya puppy could be, I couldn’t wait to get started reviewing this feeder!
Neater Feeder: What Is It
Normally I spend quite a bit of time going into a company, but the little video Neater Feeder made does a great job talking about the Neater Feeder. What really interested me though was how it was made and their non-profit work. The first feeder itself was created for the inventor’s rescue dog, Duke, who is a bit of a messy eater (which you will see from the videos). To help contain his mess, the Neater Feeder was created, which turned doggy mealtime into a pleasant experience for everyone! Neater Feeder: Effectiveness
Okay, I’ll be honest: the inventor of the Neater Feeder is a genius. With the way this feeder was designed, it truly does keep mess in the feeder itself. The first line of defense is the high outer wall, which protects your floors and walls from messes caused by bumps or a very thirsty/excited dog. This is further assisted by the no skid feet,keeping the water dish from going for a slide. I wasn’t too sure about the skid part on the feet when I first saw it, but once I saw Reya playing with her bowl and it going nowhere, I was convinced. As most large dog owners know, if a dog is determined to do something, it takes a lot to deter them. Reya very quickly gave up trying to move her Neater Feeder and focused on what was in the dish.
Now, what really makes the Neater Feeder effective and cool is the upper and lower reservoir. Its hard to see from the pictures, but when the feeder is assembled properly, it is at a very slight tilt. This makes eating easier for your dog (or cat), while also making sure that nearly-spilled water flows easily into the lower reservoir. As well, to make sure that food and water doesn’t make a mess, the strainer catches excess food, keeping it on the top reservoir, as water neatly flows down. Reya seems to enjoy this as well since it makes sure that not a single piece of food gets away at meal time.
Neater Feeder: Clean Up
Like me, you are probably wondering how easily this feeder is to clean. No matter how clean you try to be, the Neater Feeder will need cleaning every so often. I am happy to say that the Neater Feeder is almost trivial to clean. You can either clean it quickly with a paper towel between meals, or throw it in the dishwasher when things get a bit too bad. With Reya’s old medium Neater Feeder, I would throw it in the dishwasher and let it take care of the rest. Her larger Neater Feeder, however, is a bit more of a challenge just because of size. If I put it in the dishwasher, that is all that will fit in there. The other Neater Feeders, however, easily fit in the dishwasher alongside other dishes, making clean up simple. For sanitary reasons though, I do put Reya’s Neater Feeder in the dishwasher on the anti-microbial setting, just to make sure we never have an issue with contamination. Yes, I’m paranoid, but it’s better to be safe than sorry when it comes to my puppy’s health!
Neater Feeder: Comfort
Even though the Neater Feeder‘s main focus is dealing with mess, its other major purpose is making sure mealtime is comfortable for your pets. As all pets owners know, mealtime is very important to our animals, and the slightest change can make them very nervous. Like us, having to bend down in strained positions to eat can also bring about unnecessary muscle strain and irritation. It is very common for dogs especially to have to deal with neck and joint strain due to leaning down while eating, and obviously the larger the dog the more this will happen. Since they don’t have an easy to way to communicate this, it usually ends with them eating quickly to avoid pain and discomfort. When dogs are eating at the proper height, they not only avoid pain, but are able to better digest their food by slowing down and relaxing. With how the Neater Feeder is designed, you can adjust it for your pet’s height based on the size of the Neater Feeder itself, and by purchasing leg extensions. While Reya doesn’t need them just yet, she will when she gets older, making it important for pet owners like me to have options to make things easier for our favorite dog(s).
Neater Feeder: Quality
While this feeder is very effective at what it does, you are probably wondering about quality and how long it will last. I personally am very impressed with the quality. As you guys have probably seen from my other reviews and pictures, Reya is a very big puppy and like all Alaskan Malamutes, is only going to get bigger. She is still about 30 pounds from her full grown weight, which will be about 100 pounds. Like most malamutes, she is very motivated by food. This means that mealtime is always filled with excitement and her sometimes coming to the bowl at full speed. She has bumped, played, and run right into the Neater Feeder numerous times over the months. I am happy to say that the Neater Feeder not only held up to her abuse, but contained the mess of being bombarded by a 50-70 pound puppy.
Now, before I go any further, the Neater Feeder does not advertise being chew proof. Reya has never had an interest in biting her feeder, so I’m not sure how it would handle a heavy chewer. The plastic part of it, however, is made from heavy duty recyclable polypropylene plastic, so it should hold up to quite a bit of abuse. The bowls themselves are also nice, stainless steel bowls, with the food dish capable of holding up to 7 cups of food, while the extra capacity water dish can hold 9 cups of water! From what I have seen, I expect the Neater Feeder to last for many years, if not the next decade. If it can withstand a hyper Alaskan Malamute, I think it can withstand just about everything!
Neater Feeder: Overall
Having had pets with and without the Neater Feeder, I have to say I have no clue how I ever survived without one of these. Whenever we go visiting without bringing this feeder, I always regret it. With Reya’s size, it creates a mini flood in my in-laws kitchen, which no one really enjoys except Reya. Really, the Neater Feeder takes the mess out of meal time with Reya and keeps things much more sanitary. I just couldn’t image being without it now. Since I consider the Neater Feeder essential for any dog or cat owners, I have to give it an A++ rating and I’m not really sure that is enough plusses!

After having used this with Reya, I have no clue how I could ever go back to using ordinary pet bowls.

I have 2 black labs that make alot of mess and I never know where to look for their dishes as they are pushed all over the floor. Plus when they drink the whole floor is a big mess of water. This would work great for my dogs.

I think the Neater Feeder is one is one of the best inventions ever for our furry children. It keeps tge mess contained so it’s not all over the floor. This keeps us from getting upset with our pets. Kudos to the inventor.

This would be perfect for our pitbull. She is a messy water drinker..wet feet are always a issue in our house! She dribbles all over. I think having a stand up bowl and food dish woudl benefit her tremendously! This dish seems wonderful… the non-skid feet are also great!

I agree with you that the guy who invented the Neeater Feeder is a genius and he was probably tired of cleaning up after his dogs, like I am with my cats, I have one who picks out and drops food he does not like and then drips their water all over the feeding mat, he is messy. I like that these come with extensions for taller animals. I love the bronze one for cats..
I have an old dog who has arthritis so the extra hiegth of this would help a lot. She is also a messy eater and drinker so it would definitely help with spills.

I SERIOUSLY really need one of these. Perhaps two or even three. I have five Treeing Walker Coonhounds (ranging from 52 to over 70 pounds), three additional Walker hounds from my rescue that are temporarily staying at my house, and my three cats. The cats are neat, but if you have ever seen a Treeing Walker Coonhound – or ANY Coonhound – drink you know how much they like to dribble water out of their mouths when they are finished drinking. The area around my dogs' water dishes are always wet and I've been looking for a solution. This is it! I wouldn't even put food in the bowls – just water in both bowls. I've entered several giveaways for this product but so far haven't won… Maybe I'll be lucky this time!

We have 2 kitties and they cannot eat or drink without making a mess. This looks like it would be great for them and easy for my small children to help keep clean.
We adopted a standard poodle who was on her own until she was 5 months old. That meant she had to forgae for food and has developed a habit of digging through her bowl, which we cannot break. We understand the behavior, but it makes a mess on the floor. This would be a real godsend for her (and us!).

this is a wonderful idea for a pet feeder its ashame i didnt think of it first. i like the idea of no mess on the floor.
We would love a Neater Feeder in out house, with 5 cats that are all 20 lbs give or take, they can be pretty sloppy. They fling their food when they eat and my Mr. Abraham seems to think that the water bowls are for drinking and play. What I like most is that being raised such as they are that it is healthier for the pets and more comfortable. I dream of the day I'm not sweeping food off of the floor and wiping up water constantly. Great post-thank you!

What a fabulous invention. My dog thinks it is fun to knock her food bowl over and eat one nugget at a time. Thank goodness she doesn't try to tip the water but she is a sloppy drinker and this would catch some of that water. Sure hope I am the lucky winner,

Just got a great dane. She is only 4 months old but is already very big. This is the perfect feeder for her, especially being it is taller. With a dog her size, a raised feeder is better for her health. However, with it being a clean feeder, will save me from having so much mess on the kitchen floor. Thanks for this product.
This Neater Feeder is ideal for my two cats.My male cat is fairly easy to get along with,but my female kitty likes to push her bowl around just for entertainment sake,and knock water over for the thrill of it.

This is a awesome design. We have adopted/rescued a good old dog. Homer has had a rought life, so we are trying to pamper his last years. With arthritis, it is a struggle for him to get down to his dishes, this looks like it would bring everything up to his level. It would make a great birthday gift for him next month. Our Homer will be 10.

I have to say you're right..the inventer is a genius…my two dogs almost drown us when lapping water..it's always all over my kitchen floor even when we put down towels. What a problem-solver this would be.
I have said this in the past but I am fairly certain dogs are the kings/queens of mess making! While the Neater Feeder doesn’t solve anything, it really does keep my kitchen much neater!

I came upon this through an email today & have to say I love this! We have 2 large dogs & they do make a big water mess! I love how they are elevated so it is easier for them to eat.
My mom takes care of my brother's extra large German Shepherd. He is a great dog, except he is one messy eater. She feeds him outside to contain the mess as much as possible, but the ants and birds invade the area thanks to the dropped kibble. The Neater Feeder sounds like it just may solve her problem.
I have never seen anything this neat for auto feeding my dog! I have an auto water/food feeder now and I'm so tired of constantly scrubbing the huge water thing because of dropped food and slimy floors from dropped water. This is awesome! Love the height as well so dogs don't have to slouch. Stainless steel is an awesome addition as well less bacteria! If I don't win this I will be looking for it.

This would be great for my sheltie, but the shi tzu is just too small. I bought a small rug for her bowls to sit on, this makes clean up a lot easier, but the neater feeder would be wonderful for the sheltie. Thanks for the contest.

This is quite an innovative design. I have both a dog and a cat – but it is my cat that is a messy eater. Because of a condition she has, we have to water down moist cat food and I am forever wiping up dried cat food off the floor – ick.

I love the idea of no mess no spill feeder. I can't count the time's I had to pull out the broom or mop to clean up spills and end out haveing to mop the whole floor over a small spill.Do to a back injury it is not as easy to do.

I have two malamute mixes, and they are food hounds. I was not aware that dogs experience pain while eating if they have to bend down to eat. I would love to win so I can quit putting their bowls on a chair while they eat.
Kelly, its so rare to find another mal owner! They really are huge dogs, aren’t they? The Neater Feeder with the legs would be perfect for yours and if yours are anything like my Reya, they sure know how to mop the floor when they drink! The pain comes from them having to bend down unnaturally low. For example, for mals, bending down to the floor for a normal food dish is very very low for them for anything more than a quick up and down motion.
My dog Frankie is such a piglet when he he eats! He even will take the food out of the bowl by the mouthful then put in on the floor to eat. This would be helpful!

I really like the Neater Feeder as it collects spills as the dogs use it and that it is up off of the floor. The fact that it is durable and cleaning it is easy are extra bonuses. I would love to win this for my fur babies.
I need one of these! I have a Dogue de Bordeaux who is the messiest dog going! Do you know that movie Turner and Hooch? Well, they were not lying about the drooling mess! We even clean our ceilings!
This would be great for our 2 rescue dogs. They make a mess. Also, every time my mother comes over, she ends up kicking the water bowl and getting water all over the floor. I love that there is no spilled water or food.

I just got an 8 week old (she's 10 weeks old now) German Shepherd puppy. This is exactly what I need for her. She is, hands down, the sloppiest eater I have ever had. And she loves to tip her water dish over and play with it/carry it around the house. Neater Feeder is the perfect answer to my problems, especially since it can grow with her.
You would probalby do well with the medium sized one with legs, or do what I did. I have a medium sized Neater Feeder and a large one with legs for when she finishes growing.
My big dog needs this badly. I would love for him to eat more easily rather than having to hunch down so far to eat.
I have wanted one of these for some years now. We have a small Chiquaqua house dog that is 10 years old now and she is having some stomache issues and I think this bowl system would help her out with her indigestion. I also love how neat and clean it would keep the feeding area
ive been seeing this everywere now, ive been wanting to try it. my dog is alittle bit messy i have to admit and this would be super great to catch any spills and food that falls its perfect thanks for the review.
My older dog was a fairly messy eater to begin with, and I hated cleaning up soggy kibble. To be fair, I'm very clumsy and at least some of the water spills was from me accidently kicking the dish. So when I got a neeter feeder, I was very pleased- it did make a big difference. Then Cheyenne was diagnosed with malignant melanoma and needed to have half of her jaw removed. She's doing great now, and can eat and chew everything that she could before the surgery- the only "downside" is that she's even more messy when eating. While I'd take a messy floor any day if it means I get to spend even just a little more time with Cheyenne, I have to say the Neater Feeder went from a "this is a cool product, I'm glad I have it" to "I don't know how I'd live without this". Cuts down SO much on the mess. Now, if they could just figure out how to keep Cheyenne from *intentionally* dropping her food into the water so she can go back hours later and go "bobbing for kibble", this would be the greatest invention ever, lol!
Great idea! Who wants to eat off the floor – our pets included. When you think about it, it can't be comfortable or easy on the digestive system to eat like that. Plus, this is supposed to help keep the area clean, and helping with cleaning is always appreciated.

Amazing invention for feeding dogs. I love the feature where the spill over water goes to a resevoir without ending up on the floor. In my house it always ends up on the floor.
Very excited for this feeder. my dog just had 4 pupies and along with the 2 adults, this is going to be awesome to have! Save water/food and the hassle of cleaning non stop!
I am a fan of anything that will help keep the looks cleaner. We have 5 dogs plus fosters so I need all the help I can get!

What a great idea. We might be getting dogs again after being pet free for a couple years. I'll have to keep this in mind.
