Like many pet parents, I worry quite a bit about Reya’s health. We feed her natural food, give her lots of exercise, and of course, lots of love. Before Reya came to our family, however, I spent quite a bit of time researching and being a paranoid expecting dog mom who wanted to make sure everything was ready. What surprised me the most was the importance of dental health for dogs, especially since it was something my parents never worried about with our dogs growing up. The statistics are actually quite shocking – over 89% of dogs and 83% of cats show signs of dental disease by the age of 31. With dogs especially, dental disease is no joke and very easily lead to medical problems later in life for our dogs, according to PetMD2. In our household, dental health is important for humans and dogs alike, and we go out of our way to make sure Reya’s teeth and gums are as healthy as possible.
While I knew the statistics, it never dawned on me how many people didn’t know the importance of dog dental heath until everyone comments about Reya’s beautiful white teeth. Knowing that all of you want your dog being as healthy as possible, I was delighted when Petsmart® asked us to share with our readers information on dental health as part of Dental Health Month.
During Reya’s first puppy checkup, our vet spent quite a bit of time stressing dental health with us as new dog parents. After the visit, I did some research and found that vets at PetMD recommend 3 major dog dental health tips:
- Regular Dental Cleanings
- Brushing Your Dog’s Teeth
- Dental Treats
When I asked our vet what treats we should be using for Reya, he very quickly recommended GREENIES®Dental Chews. It is rare that when a company boasts that they are vet recommended, that it really is true, especially in our experience. GREENIES Canine Dental Chews are daily treats that are low in fat and nutritious for adult dogs. As well, they have been proven to clean dog’s teeth by:
- fighting both plaque buildup
- tarter build up
- freshening breath
- maintaining healthy teeth and gums.
These treats, make by the NutroCompany® were the first to all the strict requirements and standards set forth by the Veterinary Oral Healthy Council. GREENIES have also been proven to control plaque and tarter accrual in dogs, based on a 28 day feeding study with dogs who had one GREENIES Dental Chew per day. Dogs who had the chew daily averaged 60% less tartar accumulation, 33% less plaque accumulation, 80% healthier gums, and 45% improvement in oral malodor compared to dogs who only received dry food.
Now, with such high recommendation, I couldn’t imagine feeding giving Reya any other type of Dental Chews. While she grew up with the puppy version of GREENIES, we have been using their Large variety for quite some time. Since we were running low, I decided to take a trip to Petsmart and show you the type of GREENIES we buy for Reya. As you can see, there are many different varieties, allowing you to get exactly what your dog needs. There are seven main varieties of GREENIES Dental Chews (TEENIE, Petite, Regular, Large, Jumbo, Weight Management, & Senior) and cat dental chews for any feline residents in your household. Not only are these treats healthy for your dog or cat, but they are also quite cute. Since Reya uses the large variety, you can see the details on these chews, designed to look like a doggy toothbrush.
Now, you are probably wondering how difficult it is to get your dog to eat these chews. In all honesty, I have never seen a dog that DIDN’T go crazy for GREENIES. We have to spell them out in our household because Reya will start doing hops and tricks if she hears the name or sees the box. They are her favorite treat of the day! As you can see, Reya is pretty excited about her GREENIES!

dogs dental health matters the most because they also eat food and like the way we are concerned about our cleanliness theirs is important too as they stay with us. i also like the way Greenies works with dogs to keep their teeth clean and away from smell.

Flame seriously does not like to have her teeth brushed. We tend to put it off for too long, I’m afraid….
I have to admit, when I first got my pup I never thought about dental care for her until the vet brought it up. Since then I regularly brush her teeth and we to use Greenies! She LOVES them!
My 12 year old Schnauzer just had an absessed tooth, and had to have 2 teeth removed. Some breeds are more prone to dental disease than others, and apparently Schnauzers are one of them. I’ve been using a plaque buildup reducing liquid that you can put in their drinking water to help out.

My dogs love these but they eat them so fast! Greenies make their breath much better too.
these work great on large dogs but i have a 5lb dog who doest chew or play with toys. Im also told by other small dog owners that these make their dogs sick to their tummys. But my shepherd used to love them and they worked great for her.
Kathryn, I personally prefer Greenies but there are so many awesome dental chews and treats out there. Our vet recommended Greenies so that was our personal choice, but we also use antlers to keep Reya’s teeth beautiful. For small dogs, its especially important that you take care of their teeth. If they don’t do the chews, brush daily! My mother’s Yorky refuses to eat any for of dental treat but loves getting her teeth brushed. 🙂

This is good to know….we don’t brush our dogs’ teeth and the older one needs a vet cleaning but he’s also 13 so it isn’t recommended but his breath is AWFUL!! I’ll look into Greenies…thank you for the helpful information!
Sorry to say I don’t own a dog. I want one just cant afford one right now. but when I do get one I will keep in mind what you have said about Greenies.
I’ve always heard of great things about greenies and have given my dogs some and they loved it!
I have bought these for my Pom and she is fussy. Sometimes she will eat them other times not. But I do believe they work. I have had her teeth cleaned twice and she is 9 years old. I brush them with a put on my finger tooth brush and use a gel that was recommended. Pom’s are well known for losing teeth and tooth breaking. I know many owner’s who have their Pom’s teeth cleaned every year and still they have bad teeth. I do the best I can. I love my dog!!!

Reya’s is so gorgeous! She reminds me of my Siberian that passed away a couple of years ago. Anyway, we LOVE Greenies!!! They are my packs favorite dental chews! We give a dental chew daily to each of them, along with their brushings. Dental health is so important to keeping them healthy and happy!

My dog, Jasper LOVES GREENIES Canine Dental Chews. I have some in the house now. As a matter of fact, my cat teases him and tries to take them from him. My dog is 15 human years old!
Yes our pets dental health is just as important as ours. Their dental health can cause problems just like us if teeth aren’t regularly brushed. Your dog is beautiful!

It’s important to take care of a dogs teeth. Not only do they get rancid smelling breath, you don’t want them to lose any teeth.
Those statistics on dental are shocking. I use Greenies chews for my dog and she loves it.
A lot of people take dental work on their animals for granite, when it is very important.
Hmmm… I tried Greenie’s before, but really didn’t like how chewy it looked since I was expecting something harder for my pup to work on, so that it would last longer. I found some extra crunchy treats for my pup’s breath and to minimize tartar build-up, but have yet to find a toothpaste he actually likes.
You have to find what is perfect for your dog. IF you check out the link, Petsmart features a variety of different treats. Greenies is what we use but I know a lot people love Whimszees (I think that is how its spelled). They are a bit harder and designed to last a bit longer. It is also important you get one appropriate for your pups size if you want it to last a bit longer.
my dogs dont chew on things like greenies.my dogs need something thats more like a treat just eat and go.thats what my dogs like.they need a quick fix.
You may want to try a variety of different brands. If they don’t like dental treats, its a MUST that you brush their teeth to prevent tooth decay. Usually bad teeth can lead to long term issues for dogs.

That’s a beautiful dog. Is it a husky? I don’t have a dog but growing up my parents always did. I suffer from allergies and am looking for a short haired,sweet tempered pet. Some dogs are too high strung. I’d like a laid back, yet loyal pet.
She’s actually an Alaskan Malamute. Think of a very laid back, large husky that loves everyone and you have a malamute. lol!

Dental health is so important for all animals. I have got Greenies before and they went over well.
Although i do not have a dog, this is good info and will be passing on to my sister and brothers families. my family has cats and usually give them treats that are for this purpose.
Dog dental health is so important! Our poor pups had to have some teeth pulled. Smaller dogs have lots of dental problems, I wish we had been more thorough.

I would recommend trying a different brand. Like humans, our dogs have different tastes. If they don’t like any, go with just brushing their teeth. 🙂
