For the past four years, I have tried a variety of different green laundry detergents. Before I made the decision to move to more natural cleaners and green products, I started looking for eco friendly laundry detergents, due to my sensitive skin. A lot of the cleaners I found that claimed to be green either didn't work, or weren't as green as they advertised, still having many of the irritating chemicals that made me break out in the first place. It wasn't until recently that I found my new favorite laundry detergent – CitraSuds Natural Laundry Detergent!
CitraSuds Natural Laundry Detergent
In our house, I have been a fan of the CitraSolv brand for some time, especially after trying CitraDish – their dishwasher detergent. Like Citradish, CitraSuds Natural Laundry Detergent contains no harmful chemicals, including phosphates, EDTA, or NTA. As well, they contain no synethetic perfumes or dyes, allowing you to enjoy fresh smelling laundry made with real citrus essences. This septic- and greywater-safe laundry detergent is a vegetable based detergent, completely non-toxic and void of petroleum-based ingredients.
What I appreciate most about CitraSolv, (beyond the fact that their products work so well) is the fact that they never test on animals! The company actually donates thousands of dollars a year to help different animal organizations and local shelters in their area. All of their products are also certified with the following programs and companies:
- Leaping Bunny Certified
- PETA Animal Treatment Assessed
- Green America Seal of Approval – Gold
CitraSuds Natural Laundry Detergent: Effectiveness
Over the past few months, I have really enjoying using CitraSuds Natural Laundry Detergent . Most of the other green laundry detergents that I have tried previously did a terrible job of cleaning my laundry – either not cleaning the laundry effectively or even actually staining clothes. I have really tested this detergent and seen it get rid of even the worst stains, including tomato sauce! Unfortunately, I have not tested it with grass stains, since I don't have a bottle of this at our house in Kentucky.
One of the only drawbacks I can see to using CitraSuds Natural Laundry Detergent is if you do not have a front loading washing machine. The bottle claims it can wash 32 loads of laundry since it is very concentrated, but I usually expect to get a bit more than that out of my detergent. Luckily, for people who need HE detergent like me, I get a great bargain with this stuff. If you are using Citra Suds Natural Laundry Detergent with a front loading machine, you do not even pour it to the first line in the cap, as stated by the instructions. You can really get almost twice as many loads with this detergent! For individuals living on a budget and still trying to stay green, this detergent is perfect!
CitraSuds Natural Laundry Detergent: Smell
If I had to pick one thing I love the most about doing laundry with CitraSuds Natural Laundry Detergent , it is the smell! This detergent has a very strong orange smell that makes your clothes and washing machine smell fresh and wonderful. Once your clothes are dry, however, it only has a very subtle scent, something that is perfect if you don't want to smell too strongly scented, or have someone with allergies.
Even though I likely shouldn't brag about, it also keeps your clothes smelling amazing if you happen to leave your clothes in the washer for a day or two. Normally when this happens, our clothes have an awful smell to them that could easily turn your stomach, forcing us to rewash clothes at least two additional times to remove the smell. With CitraSuds Natural Laundry Detergent, our clothes still have a slight citrus smell the next day. While it's not very strong, this is much better for my time and for the environment than having to rewash clothes!
CitraSuds Natural Laundry Detergent: Overall
Right now, I couldn't imagine using anything else other than CitraSuds Natural Laundry Detergent . While it may seem expensive at first, it really is worth the money if you own a front loading washing machine. I still wish it was in a larger container, but with it lasting me about two to three months, I really cannot complaint too much. Overall, I give the CitraSud laundry detergent an A+ rating with it being a very effective green laundry detergent. I usually purchase Citra Suds either on Amazon.com or Alice.com, depending on who has the better sale. Usually, however, it is Amazon since they do ship to our apartment for free.

Is there anywhere else to purchase this product? and does it come in a trial size? Since the grandbaby is so sensitive to detergents I would hate to spend money on it and then have her break out. Thanks.

Hi Mia,
I first found this product on Alice.com, but I think they are a bit expensive. I bought it there before they priced themselves out of the market (at least in my opinion.) I linked to the big bundle of them since this is what I buy to save money (yeah, I’m a penny pincher). If you like to buy a single bottle to try it, you can find it here.
Citradish Laundry Detergent
As for samples, while I haven’t seen them, but most companies are very happy to send you a sample if you write them. I believe their email address is clean@citrasolv.com . I have very sensative skin and break out with just about everything. Most things that claim to be for people with allergies (such as the free & clear) break me out. This is one of the first things I found that really works. The only thing I would say is that it is very very concentrated. A large load of laundry only take about a 1/6 – 1/8 of a cup if you have an HE washer. It has a very nice measuring thing on the lid for everyone to make it easy. As someone with skin sensativies though, I can really vouch for this stuff. I hope I helped 🙂

I need to try this for my daughter. She has really sensitive skin, and breaks out easily from chemicals.

It is one of the few I have tried that doesn’t break me out. I always feel bad when I go visit family and they try helping with laundry since I’m just so sensative.

I haven't tried any of these green laundry detergents yet. Partly because they're so expensive, and party because I worry about how effective they will be. I really want to though! I hate to think about how awful the stuff I usually use is. This sounds like a good one to try!
Susan Bewley says
If you have an HE washer (front loading), this stuff is sooo cheap since it is very concentrated. Like I said, a little really goes a long way. If you don’t it can be a little pricy. I think the bottle I have is 50 oz and does a little over 50 full loads. I have been on this bottle for about three months.
