Do you remember your first prom? Next to our wedding, it is one of the most important events any adults life For girls, finding the perfect prom dress can be a challenge. I know when I helped my little sister find her dress, we to four different cities, trying to find that 'perfect' dress that made her smile. As someone who loves history, however, I am also fascinated with the history behind a lot of the things we consider important in our lives. I love looking at old prom pictures and seeing the differences in styles. I'm just glad I didn't go to prom in the 90's when the bright poofy dresses were in.
My prom dress was a dual shade of gold (silk top, satin bottom), and I still have it hanging in my closet at my mom's house! 🙂 I wonder if it will come back in style for my daughter's prom in about 16 years 🙂

Wow, I remember how important Prom was to me! I had so much fun at mine. However, now girls go "all out" and put out some MAJOR cash for their dresses, and whatever else! Oh well, I'm just glad I went! Thank you for the information though, it is very interesting!
our class was 88 and I must say our dresses were big and full southern bell style not sure where that fits in but thats what we wore

I went to my promo in the early 1970's. I was into the hippie scene so I wasn't too worried about a screaming fancy gown. It just had to be floor lenght and hippie looking.

This was pretty cool to see. I love how the styles changed but were still quite modest unlike today.
I like the Starlet prom dresses the best. They look elegant and the dresses look flowing! But I grew up when the dresses were the Hippie style, and I did not like them.
Very interesting. I think proms have become so overblown, materialistic and fraught with romantic drama that they've lost much of their charm. Of course, being a teen of the '80s, I did live through the most decadent era of them all. Maybe today's teens aren't as obsessed with expensive, overly-embellished dresses and big hair. The one thing I definitely don't envy them in formalwear is the ridiculously high heels. I took a tumble on prom night in 3-inch heels, so I can only imagine how much it must hurt to teeter in 6-inchers. How can they dance the night away?

I did not know that proms were such a relatively "new" thing! I do remember all the work I went through to prepare for prom, and how I wish I hadn't bothered!

Dresses have changed over the years and I am glad to see a trend decreasing. For the last 10 years kids have dressed far too revealing. Prom is a formal rite of passage not a chance to dress trashy.

I never went to prom, but I don’t regret it. However, learning about the different styles over time is nice.
