Some people are ridiculously difficult to shop for. What do you gift the person who has everything? One possible idea is to look to their pets – a person who opts for function over fashion (like a brother who refuses to throw away his shirt with fifty million holes in it…) might appreciate a themed mat to place under pet food bowls, or someone whose dog constantly goes through the squeakers in their toys might appreciate a little gift basket of dog toys.
You might ask, then, what do you gift bunny owners? While rabbits are not starter pets and do require a lot of care, it’s actually pretty easy to keep them happy! Next time you don’t know what to gift a rabbit owner, consider giving one of these seven ideas:
Salad Spinner
This may be the most surprising option on this list. Before I lived in a household with multiple rabbits, I scoffed at the idea of salad spinners – and I’m a vegetarian! Who, I thought, could possibly need to wash that much lettuce? But a salad spinner is actually a great gift idea for rabbit owners – given that bunnies require fresh greens daily, it gets cumbersome trying to wash and dry that amount of produce every day. A salad spinner really helps cut down on the wash time and makes feeding time for bunny a breeze.
Bunny-Safe Plants and Herbs
This can actually be a two-for-one gift idea for rabbit owners who love gardening! Although traditional house plants like aloe are a no-go, you might consider gifting roses, fruit plants like strawberries and blueberries, or fresh herbs like rosemary and parsley. Indoor gardening has become increasingly popular, so even bunny owners without a lot of outdoor space can enjoy these gifts. Check out a list of more bunny-safe foods here!
Clubhouses make life 1000% more fun. Just look at that smile!
Fleece
Everybunny needs a soft place to rest, and a yard or two of fleece is a great material for bunnies to flop, hop, and snuggle on! Fleece can do double duty as a floor mat and clubhouse, and the scraps make great toys. My bunny, Biscotti, loves scooting his fleece around and pretending he’s a ghost. Check out craft stores like JoAnn Fabrics and Hobby Lobby – they usually have fleece on sale during the colder months, but they always have promotions and coupons to help you save money.
Pet Bed or Cuddle Cup
Whether it’s spending time together with their owner or during playtime in their pen, bunnies love safe places to rest and to explore. A pet bed or cuddle cup made of grass, fleece or cotton for them to sleep in is a fun option!
Yummy Eats and Treats
Bunnies love a good snack, and there are a lot of great treat options out there (including the plants and herbs listed above!). Although you could certainly put together a fruit basket, a more fun option might be a bunny basket of Timothy hay cubes, seagrass mats (great for both chewing and playing with), apple branch sticks, and Timothy hay carrots!
Seagrass mats are the best! Food and fun in one.
Toys
Many bunnies are very playful and love toys! Some great toy gift ideas for bunny owners include: plastic baby keys (plastic only, not the ones made with material for teething!), small plastic whiffle balls, and seagrass mats (for chewing and tearing apart). Untreated hardwood toys are also great ideas, but AVOID oily woods like pine and cedar.
For a completely free toy addition, save your empty paper towel or toilet paper rolls and offer them whole or cut into fun shapes! Bunnies love rolling them around, chewing them, and figuring out how to get tasty treats or hay out of them. Bunnies also love to play in and chew on cardboard boxes, so boxing up the gift beforehand is an added gift itself.
Playpen or Exercise Pen
Although pet stores tote hutches and small cages as great bunny starter sets, these are not good homes for rabbits. Rabbits need a lot of room to run around and play, and bunnies stuck in a cage all day will not be happy or healthy. A playpen or exercise pen allows them to get out of their house for a while, and to better explore the world around them without fear of the bunny going somewhere he or she shouldn’t (inside or outside). An exercise pen at least 30″ tall makes an ideal gift for rabbit owners.
Hopefully this list sparks some ideas for what to give that special bunny person in your life! What do you think would make a great gift for rabbit owners?
